Hanna Hovitie.jpg

Hanna Hovitie (b. 1991) is a film director and artist from Helsinki, Finland. She has a background (BA) in Cinematography and Editing from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Finland) and she holds an MA of Arts in Documentary Directing from the international DocNomads Joint Master Degree Program based in Portugal, Hungary and Belgium.

 

Her first short documentary Miles to Go Before I Sleep (2015) was screened at 60+ international film festivals and won 6 awards, among them the Jury Award at Ismailia International Film Festival in 2016. Following short films Terraria (2019) and To Feather, to Wither (2020) were screened at several major film festivals such as DOK Leipzig, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Melbourne International Film Festival and Tampere Film Festival. Both films were nominated for the renowned Silver Eye Award at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, To Feather, to Wither being awarded a Special Mention in the 2020 competition. Her latest short film Square the Circle (2023) premiered in the Ammodo Tiger Short Competition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2023 and is currently on the festival circuit.

 

Hanna's works range from documentary to fiction to media art and she likes to experiment with different possibilities to go beyond genre borders and stretch the boundaries of narrative. In her films Hanna explores the mythical and fantastical dimensions of everyday life and the real world.
